Mitochondrial Biogenesis

The process by which cells generate new mitochondria, expanding cellular energy production capacity.
Mitochondrial biogenesis is governed largely by PGC-1α signaling and is triggered by cellular energy demand (exercise), cold exposure, caloric restriction, and several research compounds including MOTS-c and SS-31. Peptides targeting this pathway are of interest in longevity research contexts because mitochondrial density decline tracks biological aging across most tissue types.
Measuring biogenesis in research contexts is indirect — muscle biopsies, VO2max, and recovery markers are all proxy measures. Direct assays exist but are not accessible to most individual researchers.
